Improve welfare for billions of farmed shrimp

Shrimp Welfare Project works to improve conditions for farmed shrimp, a species raised in the tens of billions each year with almost no welfare regulation. Its flagship Humane Slaughter Initiative pays for and installs electrical stunning equipment at shrimp farms and processors so shrimp are stunned before slaughter. It has been named an Animal Charity Evaluators Recommended Charity for 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Our take

Given the sheer number of animals involved — shrimp are farmed by the tens of billions annually — this is likely one of the most cost-effective-per-animal charities on this entire site. Some analysts' cost-effectiveness multipliers circulating online are forum estimates rather than audited figures, so treat the scale as directional, not a precise number.
