Help remove plastic from rivers and oceans

The Ocean Cleanup develops and operates technology to remove plastic from rivers and ocean garbage patches, including Interceptor barges in some of the roughly 1,000 rivers estimated to carry most ocean-bound plastic, and System 002, operating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch since late 2021. Recovered plastic is tracked before recycling.

Our take

A hands-on engineering approach rather than policy or habitat protection, closer in spirit to Rainforest Trust's land purchases than to 350.org's advocacy elsewhere on this list. Individual Interceptor units have been reported to cost up to $650,000 each, so this suits donors drawn to large, visible hardware projects over small recurring gifts.
