Habitat for Humanity's Global Village programme is a weeklong volunteer trip where participants travel to one of more than 40 countries to help build homes alongside local families, as part of an organisation working in over 70 countries. Volunteers work side by side with the future homeowners themselves, who typically also contribute labour or a portion of the building cost.
Different in kind from every other option here: this is a trip you take yourself, not just a donation, and the $2,000–3,000 contribution covers your own costs as much as the build — worth knowing upfront before you commit. Working alongside the future homeowners themselves, who also contribute labour or cost, also makes it a genuine partnership rather than volunteers simply building for someone else.
Where the money goes
Building materials, local Habitat programmes and the volunteer's own accommodation, meals and ground transport; volunteers typically contribute $2,000–3,000 for the trip.
Good to know
Participants typically contribute around $2,000–3,000, covering the build donation plus on-site accommodation, meals and transport.
