Give the gift of a goat

Heifer International gives families living in poverty livestock, resources and training to build sustainable livelihoods. A goat gift ($120, or a $10 share) provides milk that can be used, made into cheese and butter, or sold for income, along with training in its care. Heifer also asks recipients to pass on the first female offspring to another family, extending the gift's reach beyond the original recipient.

Our take

A tangible, giftable option if you're looking for something to give in someone else's name — the $10 share option also makes it easy to split between a few people. The practice of passing on the first female offspring to another family means a single goat gift can end up benefiting more than one household over time.

Where the money goes

One goat plus training in its care and use, given to a family in poverty; a full gift costs $120, or you can give a $10 share of one.
