New Incentives runs a conditional cash-transfer programme in northern Nigeria, paying small cash incentives — about $9.50 total per infant — to caregivers to raise routine childhood immunisation rates in an area with historically low vaccine uptake. It is one of only four current GiveWell Top Charities. A GiveWell-funded IDinsight randomised evaluation found a 22-percentage-point increase in uptake of incentivized vaccines across three states.
This is the fourth current GiveWell Top Charity on this site, alongside Malaria Consortium and Helen Keller Intl elsewhere here. Unlike most health interventions listed, this is literally a cash payment conditioned on a health behaviour — an unusual model, but one GiveWell estimates is roughly 22 times as cost-effective as GiveDirectly's unconditional cash transfers.
